To help overcome this Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new Attention Assist system, a safety aid that monitors the driver and recognises the early signs of fatigue.
Attention Assist keeps abreast of the driver’s state by monitoring a number of factors including steering wheel input, indicator and pedal operation and even the effects of side winds and road surfaces.

Mercedes’ boffins have discovered that steering wheel input is key to monitoring driver fatigue as tired drivers have difficulty in maintaining the correct course.
This leads to small errors at the wheel, the driver having to correct them to stay on the right course.
Scientific studies reveal that the reaction time of drivers is around 50% longer after just four hours behind the wheel.
After six hours behind the wheel drivers are some 8 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
Attention Assist helps prevent drivers pushing on and driving fatigued via an acoustic signal and display on the instrument cluster displaying ‘Attention Assist. Break’.
